LEGISLATOR STEVE STERN HONORS ARMY SPECIALIST JACOB S. FLETCHER
11/30/2012
HUNTINGTON, NY- Legislator Steve Stern (D-Huntington, 16th LD), Chairman of the Veterans and Seniors Committee is proud that his legislation to re-name County Road 34 between Village Line Road and Route 231 in Babylon “Specialist Jacob Samuel Fletcher Avenue” in memory and in honor of Army Specialist Jacob S. Fletcher passed the Legislature unanimously on September 13, 2012. Jacob was raised in Babylon Village and graduated from Babylon High School. He joined the Army at the age of 27 after the terrorist attacks on our nation on September 11, 2001. On November 14, 2003, he made the ultimate sacrifice for our great nation in Samarra, Iraq. Jacob cared deeply for his fellow troops, asking his mother, Dorine Kenney to send care packages and letters of support to servicemen and women who did not have family support. After Jacob’s death, Dorine continued Jacob’s wish and founded the Jacob’s Light Foundation, which to date has sent more than 500,000 pounds of supplies to the brave men and women protecting our freedom overseas.
“It is my honor to sponsor this legislation naming a portion of County Road 34 in Babylon in loving memory of a true American hero,” Legislator Stern said. “Jacob answered the call of duty and in the most dangerous conditions and through the most challenging circumstances, thought not only of his duty to country but of his fellow servicemen and women. I have had the distinct honor of working with his mother, Dorine Kenney, who continues her beloved son’s legacy through service to others.”
“I am very grateful that Legislator Stern continues to remember my son Jacob,” Gold Star mother Dorine Kenney said. “He has supported my son’s foundation from the beginning and it means so much to me to have a street named for Jacob to keep his memory alive.”
The dedication will be held on Thursday, December 6, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. at the corner of Deer Park Avenue and Village Line Road.
